Jael Backe
Jael Backe was born in Würzburg in 1965. After studying human medicine, she became a gynecologist and completed her habilitation at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg. In 2007, she was appointed as an adjunct professor (»außerplanmäßige Professorin«) at the University of Würzburg. In addition, she pursued further training in medical psychotherapy and medical genetics. For 25 years, starting in 2000, she ran her practice—covering gynecology, medical genetics, and psychotherapy—with great passion.
Her keen interest in watercolor painting, poetry, and literature dates back to her school years. Among other pursuits, she attended painting courses at the Art Academy in Bad Reichenhall, studying under Felix Eckardt and Jens Hübner. Since June 2025, she has been retired and now devotes herself entirely to writing and watercolor painting. She lives with her husband and two dachshunds in Lower Bavaria and Tuscany.
In addition to numerous scientific publications, she has authored two non-fiction books: »Schwangerschaft ist keine Krankheit« (»Pregnancy Is Not an Illness«), published by mvg-Verlag (Munich, 2012), and »Sei dein eigener Arzt: Die medizinisch fundierte Anleitung zur Selbstheilung« (»Be Your Own Doctor: A Medically Sound Guide to Self-Healing«), co-authored with Alexandra Reinwarth and published by mvg-Verlag (Munich, 2014). The profession of a dedicated physician—such as the gynecologist Jael Backe—is not something one pursues on the side. One might, perhaps, go on to become a professor, devoting all one’s available time and energy to training the next generation of doctors—a commitment that, in itself, more than fills a lifetime. Against such a backdrop, one would hardly expect a parallel career as a writer or poet. Or could it be possible after all?
For 30 years, Jael Backe has been »incubating« the work that emerged—perhaps as an »outlet« for her daily clinical practice. The first part of this volume gathers poems that speak directly from the world of medical care and the doctor’s office. Yet, this selection—rooted in the care for the lives of others—transitions seamlessly into the second part. Both sections revolve around the fragile boundary between life and death, confronting both the joy of living and the depths of suffering, capturing despair and hope within their lines.
If these poems were originally conceived as a defense against the hardships of medical practice and the distress of the human condition, they now stand as an impressive record of one of the most demanding, burdensome, and yet profoundly rewarding human endeavors.
Alongside this, she has published a »plea for medicine with heart,« which asserts, in its provocative main title: »Medicine Needs Religion«—read more HERE.
