Peter Voss
Peter Voss was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1952. After graduating from high school, he studied German, American Studies and Philosophy at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. After graduating, he worked for a few seasons as head of public relations and advertising for Opera and Ballet at the Municipal Theater in Frankfurt. He then found his way into advertising and became managing director of two agencies. As a result, he founded his own agency in Frankfurt with a partner, which he managed for over 20 years until 2014. Since then he has dedicated himself to writing.
His literary debut »Wolfsstunden / 12 Nachgeschichten« (Wolf Hours / 12 Night Stories) was published in 2021. Peter Voss describes primarily the fates of men. He tells of guys who have to torture themselves, who often fail, but still try to maintain their dignity in a life that is not always kind to them. And it is often the women who can show these men the way. These fates are described in a language that is short, direct and straightforward, based on the reality of the people and the world in which they move. In autumn 2023 the sequel »Exploding Heads / Nachtgeschichte 13 bis 24« (Exploding Heads / Night Story 13 to 24).
Peter Voss lives with his wife near Frankfurt, he has two adult sons and three grandchildren.

Peter Voss publishes his third collection of short stories, once again a dozen nighttime tales about characters who keep our insomnia alive:
In his first collection of short stories, »Wolfsstunden« (Wolves’s Hours), Peter Voss compiled a series of 12 nighttime tales that address the dark side of human existence. He tells stories of fates that may seem familiar to us, of people caught between hubris, self-pity, and despair. His characters often fail tragically in their pitiful attempts to assert themselves in a precarious world. In the second volume of the night stories, »Exploding Heads«, we once again encounter 12 characters whose lives and plans are almost impossible to bring into line with one another.
In this third volume of his »Night Stories«, it is once again the morbid sphere of the »Night Hawks« that nevertheless serves as a refuge and place of escape for these 12 characters. And once again, it is mainly men who appear here. Men who are used to defining their own values and goals, but who now have to figure out how to survive between determination and failure.

STRIKER
Almost a Night Story / Soccer Player Story (Fast eine Nacht-Geschichte / Fußballer-Erzählung)
- Series »16pages«
- 36 pages

They call him »Striker« because he once played in the US as a forward. Now he plays in the Bundesliga and is a young talent with a bright future. Until a nasty foul takes him down—and Striker faces a whole new set of challenges…
»And now this pass, and their number eight extends it with his head, right into his path. Not offside, keep going, everything fits, he runs – and with a casual trick, without thinking twice, he dribbles right through the legs, leaves the Viking behind and heads for the goal alone, ball at his feet, the guy breathing down his neck. Now the goalkeeper, rushing out of his box, already at the sixteen, a quick, small, elegant swerve to the right, the keeper throws himself at him, stretches out, but he sidesteps, easily gets past him and pushes the ball precisely towards the empty goal with his right foot. – Then the impact: he only feels a crash in his left standing leg, something tearing, hears the bang« –
and for the young professional player Striker, everything changes. Will he return to his playing career after this »time out«, which has much more potential to undermine him?
Let's be clear: my publishing house has not been struck by soccer fever, nor are we deliberately targeting a lucrative subject area. It's about Peter Voss's narrative style, which he has demonstrated in two collections of »night stories«, as he calls them:
It is about male figures who are rooted in masculine themes, who define themselves through them and draw strength from them. Structuring the world, determining their environment – this is what is presented here, this is what is being questioned here.

In his first collection of short stories, »Wolfsstunden« (Wolves’s Hours), Peter Voss compiled a series of 12 nighttime stories. His characters, often severely scarred by life, were based on the personal experiences and reality of the former PR man and long-time agency owner and managing director.
Now he continues with his night stories. Like »Wolves’s Hours«, »Exploding Heads« is a term from the world of sleep: it describes what happens when life suddenly falls apart, from one second to the next. When it explodes in your head, right at the start of deep sleep—or in the middle of »normal« life, deep in the everyday life, close to its abysses.
The various night owls from his first volume of 2021 seemed familiar to us: the drug-addicted rock star who breaks out of his touring routine; the whistleblower in exile who once had everything to reveal and now has nothing left to say; the World War II veteran who struggles with guilt until the end of a long life; the boxer who mastered fighting but not life…
In the second book, too, we find mainly male characters. Peter Voss stages their struggles with themselves, with each other, and in a world of men who pursue their own values and goals and show little consideration for others. It is difficult to resist the fascination of these »guys«; their determination and resolve are enticing—even if it means throwing certain social norms overboard – at least until these »heroes« reach their limits and we gain a measure of wisdom from watching them fail. Do the female characters in Peter Voss’s night stories know better? Are they smarter when it comes to dealing with vanity, eccentricities, and self-importance? Do they know where things are headed?
Or are these all just uncertainties, imponderables, even ineptitudes in setting up and enjoying their own lives?
Wolves’s Hours

Peter Voss has assembled a collection of twelve Night Stories in his first book. He finds his characters in the Wolves Hours, the period between 3 and 5 am in the early morning, when people lie awake, when existential decisions have to be made, or one´s fate has to be accepted forever. We know his night hawks, the famous rock star on tour, who is a junkie and must leave the safety of his hotel suite for the desperately needed drugs and who meets his demons and a god in that night. The whistleblower in exile, defected to the enemy, once revealed top secrets of his home country, realizing that there is nothing left to reveal. The World War II veteran who struggles at the end of a long life with his guilt from the war and with his god about that. The boxer, who mastered his fights but not his life and now has lost his ability to win.
What is happening to us, what is our special fate, why are we what we are? The Wolves Hours can tell us all about it. This is what Peter Voss tries to explore with his characters. His themes are as essential as his titles, a »Prayer« is attempted by his characters, a »Heritage« was rejected, »Clean ups« are necessary, »Wolves« haunt and haul all around them, »A Deal with God« is always aspired and »Ghosts« are everywhere, even when »Love« is on top.
