Erwin Köstler was born in Trier in 1964 and is an Austrian translator of Slovenian literature and freelance literary scholar. He studied medicine and Slovenian studies at the University of Vienna. Even as a student, he worked as a translator and freelance scholar, and became particularly well known for his translations of the work of Ivan Cankar.

Among his many other translations and editorships of individual authors, we would like to highlight the first complete and annotated translation of Srečko Kosovel's Integrali in 1999, the collected prose of Slavko Grum in German in 2006, the book series Slovenian Library, Franjo Frančič, Sebastijan Pregelj, Andrej E. Skubic and, while they were still ostracised by the official literary institutions, Breda Smolnikar.
